As you approach your due date, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension about the big day. One way to feel more prepared and in control is by creating a birth plan. This document outlines your preferences for labor and delivery, helping to communicate your wishes to your healthcare team. As a birth photographer, I've seen firsthand how a well-thought-out birth plan can contribute to a positive birth experience. Here's your guide to creating a meaningful birth plan.
What is a Birth Plan?
A birth plan is a document that communicates your preferences for labor, delivery, and postpartum care to your healthcare providers. It's not a rigid script but rather a flexible guide that can adapt to the unpredictable nature of childbirth.
Why Create a Birth Plan?
1. Clarifies Your Preferences: The process of creating a birth plan helps you think through and articulate your wishes.
2. Improves Communication: It serves as a clear, concise way to share your desires with your healthcare team.
3. Increases Confidence: Knowing you've prepared can help you feel more confident going into labor.
4. Involves Your Partner: Creating a birth plan together can help your partner understand and advocate for your preferences.
Key Elements to Include in Your Birth Plan
1. Basic Information
- Your name, your partner's name, and your due date
- Your healthcare provider's name and contact information
- Your preferred hospital or birthing center
2. Labor Preferences
- Who you want present during labor (partner, doula, family members)
- Preferences for mobility during labor (walking, birthing ball, etc.)
- Pain management preferences (natural techniques, epidural, etc.)
- Preferences for fetal monitoring
- Desired atmosphere (lighting, music, etc.)
3. Delivery Preferences
- Preferred pushing positions
- Views on episiotomy and assisted delivery methods
- Immediate skin-to-skin contact with baby
- Cord clamping preferences
- Placenta preferences
4. Newborn Care
- Feeding plans (breastfeeding, formula, or combination)
- Preferences for routine procedures (vitamin K shot, eye ointment, etc.)
- Plans for rooming-in or nursery use
5. Cesarean Section Preferences
- Even if you're planning a vaginal birth, include preferences for a C-section in case it becomes necessary
6. Postpartum Care
- Breastfeeding support needs
- Preferences for visitors
Tips for Creating Your Birth Plan
1. Keep it Concise: Aim for a one-page document that's easy for healthcare providers to quickly review.
2. Be Flexible: Remember that birth can be unpredictable. Be open to changes if medical necessity arises.
3. Use Positive Language: Instead of saying what you don't want, focus on what you do want.
4. Discuss with Your Provider: Review your birth plan with your healthcare provider well before your due date.
5. Bring Multiple Copies: Have copies for your hospital bag, your partner, and your medical file.

If you're interested, be sure to include your photographer in your list of desired attendees and discuss any specific shots or moments you'd like captured.
